Description:
The street scene depicted here (with some artistic licence) centres on Cumberland Place Steps in The Rocks, Sydney, with Cambridge Street in the foreground and showing the back of houses fronting Gloucester Street. To the left of the steps is the back of a building called Baker's Terrace and to the right is the back of no 64 Susannah Place, one of a terrace of 4 houses, with a corner shop, that now forms the Museums of History NSW's Susannah Place Museum.
The painting has been dated to ca.1963 from its smilarity to another view of the same locality by Wakelin dated 1963. This second painting was sold at auction by Christie's in Melbourne in April 2006 under the erroneous attributed title "Paddington".
