Description:
This picture is one of a group of street scenes in The Rocks painted by SophieSteffanoni in 1901-1902. They relate closely to the subjects being painted by Julian Ashton and others around the turn of the 19th-20th century when the interest in 'old Sydney', with its picturesque, winding streets and air of dilapidation culminated in an 'Exhibition of pictures of Old Sydney' held at the Society of Artists' Rooms in Pitt Street in March 1902.
