Description:
This picture is one of a set of 4 photographs, originally of identical size and mount, but now each having 2 sides of the mount cut off and each showing evidence of having a mount card glued over the remaining sides - suggesting that the 4 photographs have previously been mounted and framed together. The two photographs which formed the bottom pair in this arrangement have the photograhic studio name, "Kerry & Co., Photographers", and the address, "308 [George ]Street, Sydney" printed on mount below photograph.
Percy Lodge, in Wylde Street, Potts Point, was the home of Eleanor Wingate (1813-1898) and her husband Major Thomas Wingate (1807-1869), a retired English army officer. Eleanor, the seventh child of Richard Rouse (1774-1852), builder of Rouse Hill House in the Parramatta district of New South Wales, and his wife Elizabeth Adams (1772-1849) already owned the house at the time of her marriage to Wingate in 1856. She had previously been married to John Terry (ca.1806-1842) of Box Hill, son of Samuel Terry, a merchant landowner known in his day as the 'Botany Bay Rothschild' and Percy Lodge served as a city rendezvous for Eleanor's children and the extended Terry and Rouse families.
