Description:
Interior photograph of the painting studio created by Eliza Ann (Bessie) Rouse (1843-1924) at Rouse Hill House. Bessie Rouse was the only child of surveyor and pastoralist William Buchanan and his wife Elizabeth Lucas. She married Edwin Stephen Rouse, youngest child of Edwin Rouse (1806-1862) and his wife Hannah Hipkins (1819-1907), in 1874.
Bessie was a keen amateur artist and her paintings and hand crafts decorate a number of rooms at Rouse Hill House and feature prominently in this photograph, including the burgundy silk mantle valance painted with vignettes, easel mounted paintings and the large crazy patchwork quilt made from remnants of silk fabric, draped over the campaign chair. After Bessie's death, her daughter Nina Terry (1875-1968) transformed the studio into a breakfast room, though retaining the majority of the decoration. The room was disassembled and packed away by Rouse family in the 1970s.
This photograph is one of three within the Rouse Hill House & Farm collection taken by Dudley Batty (1875-1933), son of Emma Batty nee Rouse (1843-1928) and Dudley Davison Batty(1845-1878), and great-grandson of Richard Rouse, the builder of the house. Dudley Batty and his younger brother Aubrey, both born in England, made an extended visit to their Australian relatives in 1894, staying for some time with their uncle Edwin Stephen Rouse at Rouse Hill. Dudley Batty became a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1920.
