Description:
Looking towards Darling Harbour, showing King Street on the left crossing Pitt, George and York Streets. The Prince of Wales Opera House is in the foreground, identifiable by its large roof area. The building was badly damaged by fire in January 1872 and replaced by the Theatre Royal in 1875. Brougham Place (later Rowe Street), with its lines of small terraces, is to the right of the theatre. In the middle of the picture two large buildings stand side by side on the corner of George and Barrack Streets. They are the Commercial Bank and the Bank of New South Wales. St. Philip's Church, York Street, can be seen in the middle ground on the far right. The masts of the many ships moored in the harbour are visible above the warehouses which line the docks.
