Description:
Clovelly was built in the mid 1830s for pilot Thomas Watson. It was bought in 1837 by Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur who named it Clovelly, apparently in reference to the small village of that name on the north coast of Devon. When Hannibal Macarthur became insolvent in 1848 the house was sold to Elizabeth Macarthur's son-in-law Henry Watson Parker, sometime Premier of NSW. Parker expanded the estate through purchases of adjoining property and established a garden of exotic trees and shrubs. Elizabeth Macarthur died at the house in 1850. Parker sold the house in 1862 and it became the residence of Sir John Robertson. It was untenanted for some years after Robertson's death in 1891, declared unfit for human habitation in 1902 and demolished in 1903.
