Bank of New South Wales (George Street, Sydney, N.S.W.)
Description:
This view, looking up George Street, shows part of Argyle House on the right, the Bank of New South Wales on the western corner of George and Wynyard Streets, the Commercial Bank on the corner of George and Barrack Streets, then the premises of David Jones & Co, drapers and outfitters. On the corner building next to Argyle House the name 'D. Holborow' can be discerned above the awning. Holborow was a draper who ceased trading sometime in 1869 - refer auction notices in Sydney Morning Herald 28 December 1869 p.1 for the 'remaining stock in trade of D. Holborow, George Street' and 12 May 1869 p.6 for the shop fittings. The building then became the Norfolk Hotel.
This photograph may have been one of a series of 'Photographic Illustrations of Sydney. The Streets, Public Buildings, Views in the Harbour, Botanic Gardens, Suburbs, &c.' distributed by J.R. Clarke, Book Print and Music Seller, Depot for Photographs, 23, Hunter-street, Sydney in 1870. [Date from Clarkes's advertisements for 'Photographic Illustrations of Sydney' in Sydney Morning Herald 28.1.1870, 13.7.1870, 26.9.1870]
