Description:
The photographer James William Hemus was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, in 1860, emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1864 and died in Auckland, New Zealand in 1936. Although he is known as an early New Zealand photographer he also spent some time in Victoria in the 1890s and before that in New South Wales where he worked at a photography studio called the San Francisco Palace of Art. Hemus registered his copyright in this photograph in Sydney on 1 September 1884, describing it as "the Sydney Christmas Card". In September 1885 he registered his copyright in two more photographic Christmas cards, this time in partnership with Oliver Godfrey, another photographer.
