Description:
In this photograph Margaret Steel models a blue silk wedding dress originally made for the marriage of Margaret Drummond Gentle (c1809-1885) to the Rev William Grant (1806-1897) in June 1845 at St Martin's, Perthshire, Scotland. The Grant family emigrated to New South Wales in 1853 where Dr Grant became the Presbyterian minister at Shoalhaven in 1854. William and Margaret Grant had three children who lived to adulthood, all active in the Presbyterian church, none of whom married. The youngest daughter, Miss Barbara Grant (1848-1948), gave this dress to Margaret Steel around 1937-1938 and the dress now forms part of the collection of the Historic Houses Trust property Meroogal at Nowra. The Grants had long been friends of the families associated with Meroogal - the McKenzies, Thorburns and Macgregors.
In December 1944 June Steel, Margaret's daughter, wore this dress for her wartime wedding to Charles Ronald Wallace.
