Description:
The Reverend William Grant was born in March 1806 in Nairn, Scotland, the son of Hugh Grant and Jane Clark. He received a Master of Arts from King's College, Aberdeen in 1829 and a Doctor in Divinity from the University of Edinburgh. He was licenced to preach by the Presbytery at Dornoch in November 1833. He joined the Free Church of Scotland in 1843 and married Margaret Drummond Gentle in 1845. The family emigrated to New South Wales in 1853 per the Commodore. Dr Grant was the Presbyterian minister at Shoalhaven from 1854 until his retirement in 1890. He was a widely respected Gaelic preacher and family friend of the McKenzies and Thorburns. He died at Nowra in August 1897.

A copy of this photograph was published in the "Australian Town and Country Journal" of 28 April 1894 (p.30) illustrating a profile of "the Rev. Dr. Grant, M.A., of Shoalhaven".
