Description:
Robert James Macgregor Barnet enlisted in the AIF on 4 January 1916, giving his occupation as a Surveyor's Assistant. According to his enlistment papers he had worked for A. D. Craig, a civil engineer and licensed surveyor, for two years. After basic training he sailed for the front, disembarking at Marseilles in May 1916. He died of wounds accidentally received in the field in August 1916. He was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery near Poperinge in Belgium.
Copies of this photograph are known to exist in 3 formats: a 14x10 cm image mounted on a 32x20 cm mount embossed with the studio name; a cropped 8.7x4.3 cm image on a 17x7.5 cm (folded) mount embossed with the studio name; and this postcard print with no photographer identification.

This photograph was inlcuded in a small booklet titled 'How to get near our dead: a word of consolation to those who have lost loved ones at the front', written by the Rev Donald McKay Barnet and published in 1917. The photograph formed part of the dedication 'to the memory of my soldier son Robert R.J. Barnet, 1st Australian Ammunition Column".
