This image is one of a
collection of photographs of The Rocks and Circular Quay dating from approximately 1950-1970 and has been identified as the entrance to the Newcastle Hotel which stood on the corner of GeorgeEssex Street and was demolished in 1973. On the glass above the door can be seen the incomplete name "..NCIS JAMES BUCKLEY", probably Francis James Buckley. An entry in The Dictionary of Sydney by Frank Moorhouse states that the publican was Jim Buckley and that the hotel was known to be an "arty" establishment that attracted many artists and intellectuals of the day. As such it may well have been favoured by Stuthridge, an artist as well as a photographer. Read the article here:
