Description:
This image is one of a collection of photographs of The Rocks and Circular Quay dating from approximately 1950-1970. This section of George Street is considered to be of high cultural and heritage significance and uildings depicted remain relatively unchanged today. The central feature of this image is the heritage listed Russell Hotel which stands on the right hand side of the corner. It was built in Federation Queen Anne style and features a conical slate roof. Read the NSW Government's Statement of Significance here. The building to the left, which at the time of photographing, housed the Downtown Grocer is also heritage listed and built in a mix of Victorian and Federation styles. Read the Statement of Significance here. The building to the right of the Russell Hotel features stone pediments over the lower windows, a highly ornate cornice and a parapet in front of the roof.
