Description:
This photograph is one item within a small album containing 97 carte-de-visite photographs. The album appears to have been compiled by Thomas Wingate (1807-1869), sketcher, amateur photographer and army officer. Wingate's pencilled identifications appear on the album page below many of the photographs and the album includes a number of photographs taken by Wingate himself. The album also includes some photographs of Wingate's former fellow officers from the 2nd or Queen's Royal Regiment of Foot in which Wingate served from 1835 to 1846, stationed from 1835 until 1842 in India.
Rosa and Florence Faulkner were the younger daughters of Captain Henry Cole Faulkner and his wife Rosalinda Frances Morewood. From 1839 until 1842 Henry Cole Faulkner was one of Wingate's fellow officers in the Queen's Royals serving in India. He returned to England with the regiment at the end on 1845 and 1849 was promoted to captain on the unattached list. From 1852 until the late 1870s he was a Staff Officer of [Army] Pensioners and resident in Liverpool, England. Both Rosa (Rosalinda) and Florence were born in Liverpool. Neither married. This portrait of Rosa and Charlotte is one of five photographs of members of the Faulkner family in this photograph album, all identified in the same hand, possibly that of Henry Cole Faulkner himself.
